Dean Clark, Senior Marketing Manager at Ansell, hosted a workshop at the OHS Leaders Summit Australia on ‘New changes to hand protection regulations – are your glove policies up-to-date?’ Recent changes to the two main glove standards have wide ranging implications for glove policies and hand protection programs across Australia and New Zealand. Impacting on key areas including cut protection and chemical protection, the new standards redefine the production and selection criteria for gloves across all industries. Dean Clark, a member of the Australian Standards committee for protective gloves, provided an overview of the new regulations and how they will impact your glove policies.

With background in business to business sales, Dean has a results-oriented approach to marketing – if it’s not contributing to sales, then does it need to be done? Dean has a broad range of experience from strategic planning at a top level, right through to tactical implementation. He has lead teams of individual contributors as well as working with external agencies and consultants. He is particularly passionate about digital channels, having delivered projects for web, mobile applications, social media and e-commerce. Most recently, has been working with marketing automation, lead nurturing and content marketing, delivering tangible, measurable results.

Jim McKinlay, General Manager at Telogis spoke to delegates at the OHS Leaders Summit Australia on ‘Developing a safety framework’. His presentation highlighted that as we empower our workers to do more it becomes increasingly more important to ensure safety is not compromised. He also covered topics such as: how to develop a safety framework; industry benchmarking and best practice (the safer driver); technology to Inform, manage and reward; and Outcome as a Service (OaaS).

Jim has been General Manager APAC at Telogis since 2012, overseeing the growth of the company across Australasia. Goal oriented and task focused, with strong numerical analytical skills, Jim has held Senior Executive Sales leadership roles for International organisations such as, Xerox, IBM and Sharp. Rene van der Merwe, Head of Workplace Health and Safety at Qantas and Rod Hampel, National Business Development Manager at Bodycare talk to delegates at the OHS Leaders Summit Australia on ‘Giving safety back to the people!’ Shifting the approach of Safety from control through procedures and policies to developing an adaptive and resilient workforce that are truly engaged and are personally invested in improving productivity, efficiencies and safety. In this presentation Rene and Rod touched on their integrated approach to building sustainable WHS improvements in the aviation industry.

Rene is currently the Head of Workplace Health and Safety for Qantas Group. Most recently René worked for Woolworths Supermarkets as the NSW Risk & Safety Manager, and was responsible for the project management and national roll out of the Physio Recovery program. Previously, René worked as the Global Program Manager Sustainability Advocacy for Goodyear Tire & Rubber Corporation, responsible for developing a corporate platform for Environmental, Health & Safety sustainability across four operating regions. She was also instrumental in the implementation and operationalising of the REACH (Registration, Evaluation, Authorisation of Chemicals) legislation across affected operational regions. Prior to her global role, René led targeted injury prevention programs in the South African manufacturing plant, focusing on employee engagement and empowerment, measuring success through lead indicators. Prior to Goodyear, she worked for Eveready Diversified Products as Integrated Systems Manager, responsible for implementing the first accredited, fully integrated ISO14001, ISO9001 and OHSAS18001 system in South Africa, back in 2005. René commenced her career as a Validation chemist at Aspen Pharmacare, where she had the privilege to form part of the research team for the first generic, anti-retroviral drug that was released within South Africa.

Rod currently is National Business Development Manager at Bodycare and takes a strategic and commercial approach to networking, building strong client relationships and growing Bodycare’s footprint in the occupational injury prevention and early intervention space . Rod has over 10 years’ experience working in occupational health and has worked closely with some of Australia’s largest corporate organisations to reduce their risks across the employment continuum.

Fiona Murfitt, Group HSSE Manager, Viva Energy provided the Keynote Presentation, “Sustaining An Effective Culture.”  During this presentation, Fiona spoke on the importance of an organisation truly valuing their culture, claiming that sustaining an effective HSSE Culture is about improvements and fundamentally about change. She spoke on an integrated approach and the importance of employee engagement, also recognising that to be effective, people need to have a value for this ultimate change and internal transformation.  Fiona spoke about integrating wellness practices into pre-existing HR/WHS structures and culture, saying that it’s all about integration and alignment.

Fiona Murfitt is the Group Manager for Health (incl Industrial Hygiene), Security, Safety and Environment (HSSE) for Viva Energy Australia. Managing and leading a team of professionals, she reports directly to the CEO and has accountabilities that includes the delivery of the strategic direction of HSSE across the business for continual improvement, the management of the behavioural and cognitive safety leadership approach, the provision of robust Assurance programmes and return to work, and the provision of HSSE subject matter expertise to support the ongoing management of HSSE across the business.

Fiona’s career has predominantly focused on working within high-risk operations, with more than fifteen years working within the oil and gas industry. She has held positions in Safety (HSSE), Contractor Management and Risk Management and also spent time as Director for Australia, NZ & Pacific Islands for Dupont’s consulting arm helping companies build safer more efficient and reliable operations.

Her passion around safety, performance and culture change came after a family member – Kevin was killed at work. Kevin was a contractor working on a shutdown at a refinery and the impacts to the family and friends have left a deep impression. As such, being able to influence the improvement of an organisation’s performance in a safe and sustainable way holds a deeply personal connection for her.

Sean Silvey, Head of Wellbeing, Health & Safety, Bupa provided the Keynote Presentation on, “The Importance Of Health & Wellness Through Leadership – A Total Solution.” During this presentation, Sean spoke about Bupa’s work health radar, made up between the balance of Physical, Personal, Psychological and Environmental factors. He spoke on the importance of leadership in any organisation and creating an environment that promotes healthier places, healthier bodies, healthier culture and healthier minds. Sean reflected on the link between personal health and the objectives and values of the organisation, claiming Bupa’s support to their employees. “Its important that you embrace and understand the people in your organisation; put yourself in their shoes…what are they dealing with?” He closed this presentation stressing that people are the most important part of the organisation and that  health and wellness through leadership must be achieved for any companies WHS to succeed.

Culture, often accepted as “the way we do things around here”. But when it comes to safety culture, is it something an organisation has, what the organisation is, what the organisation does, or why the organisation is the way it is? As organisations grapple with moving away from lagging indicators and look for reliable leading or positive performing indicators, does safety culture measurement offer an opportunity?

David Bond was appointed Thiess’ General Manager, Health, Safety & Security in 2011. He has been instrumental in shifting Thiess’ strategic focus from lag to lead indicators, resulting in year-on-year improvements in safety performance. Prior to joining Thiess, he held executive roles in organisations such as Downer Engineering and Transfield Services. Across more than 15 years, David has been a health & safety leader for large international organisations in mining, minerals processing, oil & gas, manufacturing, services, transport and facilities management operations. He is skilled at deploying best practice programs in diverse cultural contexts, from Australia and North America to Asia and India to the Middle East. David Schelbach is Global Manager – Safety, Health & Environment at IXOM. His remit spans corporate strategy and policy through to front line SH&E program deployment.

He began his career as a chemical engineer and now has 15 years industry experience, all of it with Orica. The first seven years were dedicated to large scale petrochemical manufacturing, technology management and process safety.

David has spent the majority of his career working for Orica in North America, with his most senior role being Vice President of Sustainability, before returning to Australia 2011, as the Global General Manager for SH&E for Orica’s Ground support business, and ultimately subsequently General Manager Safety and Health for Orica globally.

David’s passion is to look at safety differently, acknowledge complexity and look for answers to how we make more things go right, rather than less things go wrong.

David Ninnes is responsible for leading the Group in the pursuit of achieving the Group’s ambition of ‘providing an environment for our people that will enrich their health, safety & wellbeing for the whole of their lives’.

David joined Westpac Group in June 2014, having previously been responsible for Risk Management for InterContinental Hotels Group David’s professional experience spans 18 years with a passion for leadership coaching and developing people. David demonstrates this passion as a lecturer for the Governance Institute of Australia and Southern Cross University, board membership of a not-for-profit organisation and is an advisor to regulatory agencies in matters relating to safety and risk management.
