Synopsis and overview of the session
In the past decade, the workplace has undergone significant transformations. The rise of remote work, the gig economy, heightened awareness of mental health issues, and the integration of advanced technologies have redefined how we work and interact. This evolving landscape presents new challenges and opportunities for OHS leaders, whose roles and strategies must adapt accordingly.
These changes introduce new psychosocial risks that OHS leaders must address. Unlike physical safety hazards, which are often visible, psychosocial injuries such as stress and burnout remain largely hidden. If left unchecked, these issues can significantly undermine productivity, creativity, and morale.
Addressing these injuries requires a multifaceted approach, prioritising prevention, early intervention, and destigmatisation. Collaboration between businesses, government agencies, and healthcare providers is crucial. This challenge extends beyond OHS leaders to require support from all levels, from boardrooms to office floors.
In this session, we will explore the evolving role of the OHS Leader in managing psychosocial hazards, supported by case studies, reports, and observations on recent exclusions by Workcover Victoria related to stress and burnout. We will discuss the importance of promoting open dialogue and providing resources to create environments where employees feel valued, supported, and empowered.
This session will focus on:
- The importance of addressing psychosocial hazards beyond the domain of OHS Leaders.
- The costs to businesses, including mandatory, moral, marketability, and monetary aspects.
- The largely silent mental health epidemic and whether we are experiencing an emotional intelligence recession.
- The necessity of ensuring that leaders feel psychologically safe and equipped to discuss mental health and wellbeing with their teams.
