Wendi Bains, BSc, CRSP, is the Chief H&S Officer at Fletcher Building. A core member of the Executive team for the past 6 years, Wendi leads the strategic direction and governance of health, safety, wellbeing and environmental compliance across 6 Divisions (25+ Businesses) covering multiple industry sectors including quarrying, manufacturing, distribution, roading and construction. The focus on leadership, critical risk and culture has achieved a 50% reduction in recordable injuries (roughly 150 people/year), 90% reduction in serious injuries (roughly 20 people per year) and zero fatalities (from an average of 1 per year). After years as a ‘normal safety professional’ in various leadership roles globally, the past 6 years has required Wendi to critically challenge everything traditionally done by H&S, reinvent how leaders think about safety and even the role of the H&S manager, starting with herself.
