Chief Information Security Officer Asia Pacific, Telstra
As Telstra’s Chief Information Security Officer Asia Pacific, Narelle is responsible for the company’s cyber security operations, intelligence, risk, governance, compliance, development and engagement. Narelle balances these responsibilities with raising her six year old daughter and two year old son (with help from her husband, Michael).
Narelle began her career as an officer in the Royal Australian Navy, eventually assuming the role of the Navy’s first Director Cyber Warfare. In 2016, Narelle left the Navy to pursue her next chapter in the public service and was appointed the Chief Information Security Officer for the Department of Human Services. In this role, she transformed the cyber organisation, building a new state of the art Cyber Security Operations Centre and uplifting the capability from 25 to 250 personnel.
Narelle holds a Bachelor of Arts in Information Systems and English, a Master of Science in Information Technology and a Master of Systems Engineering. In addition to her love of cyber operations she is passionate about workplace culture, diversity, training and recruitment and is a current member of the RSAC Advisory Board and the AISA Executive Advisory Board.
Narelle was a finalist in the 2019 CSO AWSN inaugural Women in Security awards in the Security Champion category. In 2018 she received the CISO Lens Industry Leadership Acknowledgment; and in 2016 was on the Australia Day Honours List, being awarded a Conspicuous Service Medal in recognition of meritorious achievement as the Deputy Director – Cyber (Maritime) in Joint Capability Coordination Division.
